Charity 'very optimistic' over new TB vaccine

A leading charity has said it is "very optimistic" about a potential new vaccine for tuberculosis (TB).
Various different vaccines are currently being worked on but the most encouraging efforts appear to be from a team at Oxford University, stated Paul Sommerfeld, chairman of TB Alert.
Additional trials are required and there is "still quite a long way to go" but the new research is "very helpful" because there has not been a new TB vaccine introduced for around 80 years, he explained.
"The TB vaccine is very essential because tuberculosis continues to be one of the world's primary killer infectious diseases," Mr Sommerfeld added.
According to the Health Protection Agency, it is estimated that there are around nine million new cases of TB around the world each year, leading to almost two million deaths.
