Karzai running mate 'is former warlord'

Hamid Karzai has chosen a former warlord as his vice-presidential running mate for the forthcoming election in Afghanistan, according to reports.
Mohammad Qasim Fahim is understood to have been a commander in Jamiat-e-Islami approximately 20 years ago during the country's civil war.
Mr Fahim was vice-president in the transitional government after the Taliban was toppled in 2001, but he was not part of President Karzai's senior team when he was elected in 2004.
President Karzai has also chosen Mohammed Karim Khalili as another vice-presidential running mate for this year's election.
Meanwhile, reports suggest a senior UN representative in Kabul has expressed deep concerns about the choice of Mr Fahim as a running mate.
It is stated that special representative Kai Eide and other figures in the international community may be unhappy at the appointment.
