Australians mark first anniversary of devastating floods
Tuesday, Jan 10, 2012 Filed Under :Planet Talk Account News
Australia is mourning the loss of life and devastation caused by last year's floods in Queensland. The one-year anniversary of the deadly event is sure to have sparked cheap calls to Australia, as hundreds of people attended memorial services to remember the dead. Australian prime minister Julia Gillard attended a service in Gatton, west of Brisbane to mark the January 2011 floods, which saw thousands of people displaced. Premier Anna Bligh attended a service in Toowoomba, where she praised the recovery and said: "We stand united as one year on, proud Queenslanders with that indomitable Queensland spirit - Queenslanders who never give up and who always look after each other." The areas of Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley bore the brunt of the devastation as heavy rains created a deadly inland flood sweeping over the residential areas without warning. Communities are still recovering from the flooding, which altogether killed a total of 35 people and damaged 30,000 homes and businesses. © Copyright Use Planet Talk to call Australia with the cheapest rates to landlines and mobile
