Government moves to help tourists in flood-affected areas

The ancient Buddhist cultural site and border region of Ladakh in northern India has been one of recent casualties of a calamitous South Asian monsoon season.
According to official estimates, 189 people have died while another 400 are reported missing in the worst flash flood in 50 years. Of the missing, 220 are estimated to be foreigners.
The Indian government is continuing its rescue operations while trying to establish the numbers and locations of missing tourists through embassies and travel operators.
A spokesperson for the Indian Air Force, Priya Joshi, said: "Today our helicopters evacuated around 35 tourists including two children stranded near a Buddhist monastery situated at an altitude of 14,000 feet."
Ladakh has become the destination for high profile political figures promising aid, like Rahul Gandhi, prodigy of the Gandhi dynasty, in the aftermath of the disaster.
The government is committed to providing special assistance to affected tourists who come to Ladakh for cultural and adventure tourism every August.
Families concerned about the wellbeing of their loved ones could make cheap international calls in order to keep in contact with those stranded in the flood-hit areas.
