International calls: UK 'must attract visitors from emerging economies'

The UK must do all it can to attract visitors from emerging economies, according to tourism chiefs.
"There is a very high degree of competition in the international tourism market and we have to do all we can to encourage these new travellers to choose to come to the UK," said Kurt Janson, policy director at the Tourism Alliance.
He suggested it is important that the UK attracts this type of international visitor because emerging economies have the greatest potential to achieve long-term growth.
In addition, such countries have growing middle classes whose members attach a certain amount of prestige to visits to London in particular, he added.
Mr Janson was speaking after a report from VisitBritain found that emerging countries are simply too important to ignore.
The study revealed that Brazil, Russia, India and China between them account for 42 per cent of the world's population, have a combined landmass equivalent to 28 per cent of all dry land and constitute 24 per cent of the global economy.
