Vodafone launches solar-powered phone in India

Mobile phones users in India could soon be using solar-powered cell phones to make cheap international calls abroad.
The VF 247 had undoubtedly been created keeping in mind the needs and demands of India's rural mobile phone customer base.
Priced at a nominal Rs 1,500 the phone can be easily charged in sunlight which will obviously make mobile phone use and subsequent battery-charging way easier, especially in areas where electricity supply is sparse and unreliable.
The handset also benefits from a sun boost technology that ensures that the phone charges adequately when placed under sunlight. It requires eight hours of direct sunlight to completely charge the battery.
In addition to this, the phone is fitted out with a torch light, a colourful screen as well as an FM radio.
Marten Pieters, managing director and chief executive officer of Vodafone Essar, said: "This launch is likely to enable more people in rural India to go mobile and thus increase penetration from the current 20 percent. We will continue to invest to uplift the quality of telecom services and products in India."
