Bharti Airtel commits $600m to Nigerian mobile phone market

Mobile phone users in Nigeria look set to benefit from a major new investment in infrastructure and service delivery.
Bharti Airtel has announced that it will invest $600 million (£395 million) in Nigeria, following last month's acquisition of the pan-African mobile operator Zain.
Rural telephony investment remains a big area for the Indian-based operator, which purchased Zain for $10.7 billion (£7 billion).
Speaking to reporters, Bharti Airtel chief executive Manoj Kohli underlined the importance of investing in Nigeria's huge mobile market.
According to the AFP, he said: "We have set aside $600 million for investment in the Nigerian market in the next 12 months.
"The sum of $300 million (£198 million) will be invested in the first instance."
The company has also committed to further investment in Ghana's rural telephony infrastructure, in a bid to improve telecommunications access to mobile phone subscribers in underserviced areas.
