NCC comes down heavily on spam text messages in Nigeria

Nigerian mobile phone operators will not be allowed to send spam text messages to subscribers at unusual hours.
There has been a problem of operators sending messages, particularly concerning false lottery game wins, according to Next.
In a meeting with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), major operators in the country including Etisalat, Zain and Visafone were prohibited from embarking on any business not covered by the licence they have been issued with.
Meanwhile, in Kenya the government recently committed to making SIM card registration mandatory.
The move was taken in a bid to cut down on mobile phone crime, which has been on the rise in the country for some time.
This new rule will be complemented by a host of other new regulations designed to cut down mobile phone crime in the country.
All phone numbers will be required to be registered with identity documents and proof of address before the end of July, or they will be disconnected.
