Many international travellers are "complacent" about the risk of malaria, an expert has warned.
Jo Yirrel, an ambassador for Malaria Hotspots, said people "think it won't happen to them".
The fact is that malaria is a fatal disease if left untreated, Ms Yirrel continued, as she revealed that she has personal knowledge of the condition.
"My son didn't take it seriously - he gave away his tablets and he died from it. So that's why I do this campaign."
Ms Yirrel advises travellers who are heading to affected regions to take their full course of malaria tablets, use a spray that contains deet of at least 50 per cent strength, use bed nets at night and cover up at dawn and dusk.
According to Malaria Hotspots, every year approximately 2,000 British travellers return home with malaria.
There has been about a 190 per cent increase in travel to malarious destinations among British travellers in the last ten years, the campaign group added.
