Learning a second language can be very beneficial for young people, according to one linguist.
Being able to communicate in something other than English is increasingly important in the global economy, explains Alice Moran, press and marketing coordinator at the National Centre for Languages.
Employers are looking for people with combinational skills, she continues, and for those that operate internationally, being able to converse in a different language during international phone calls could be a selling point.
Learning another language can unlock all sorts of possibilities for youngsters in a range of businesses, Ms Moran adds.
Taking a gap year is a great way to pick up a language and develop an understanding of a different culture, she concludes.
European Day of Languages takes place on September 26th to celebrate the thousands of languages in use around the world.
The annual celebration started in 2001 and is now marked by 45 countries worldwide.
