Foreign language fluency 'key in the modern world'

Being able to speak a second language fluently will be much more important in the future, it has been claimed.
The world young people are growing up in is much more global than it used to be, with the wider availability of cheap international calls from the UK to other countries making it easier for people to communicate with each other in different languages.
Director of communications at CILT, the National Centre for Languages, Teresa Tinsley explained that the increased international competition for jobs will also make speaking multiple languages important in the near future.
She said: "It's much more international than in the past, there's many more multinational companies, foreign owned companies.
"It's about understanding the wider world around you and being a rounded person as well."
Her comments follow the publication of the a British Academy report entitled Language Matters, which recommended that urgent action is taken by universities and the government to improve foreign language learning.
