International calls: Philippines assists in Haiti rescue effort

A consular mission has been set up by the government of the Philippines to assist Filipinos caught up in the Haitian earthquake.
Esteban Conejos, under-secretary for migrant workers in the department for foreign affairs, said the taskforce is already operating on the ground as part of efforts to get help to those living and working in the country.
"Filipinos are helping each other there," he commented.
The embassy of the Philippines in Havana, Cuba, has stated that there are known to be 290 Filipinos in Haiti, mostly working in the clothing, telecommunication and power sectors.
International aid teams have started arriving in crisis-hit Haiti today (January 14th), according to reports, after an earthquake measuring seven on the Richter scale hit on Tuesday.
Thousands of people are feared dead as a result of the disaster, which struck what is widely considered to be one of the most impoverished nations in the world.
