Social media 'poses personal data risk'

People are often unaware of the danger of information they divulge on a social networking site being misused, it has been claimed.
Unlike a cheap international call, a failure to keep abreast of changes to the terms and conditions of privacy on social networks such as Facebook and MySpace could enable anyone to look at someone's personal details, according to the co-founder and editor of Social Media Portal Tim Gibbon.
He explained: "If they don't review the privacy settings and apply what they are comfortable with, then anyone could have access to the inner circles.
"It's not a case of relying upon social networks and similar platforms to do what would seem the decent thing and make it [details on your profile page] an opt-in, the normal practice appears to be that users need to opt-out."
A recent survey published in the 2010 Consumer Reports State of the Net indicated that more than half of adults post risky personal information online.
More than a fifth of Facebook users also indicated that they were not even aware the site offered privacy controls for their personal data.
