Philippines deploys warship to take stand over disputed sea shoal

The Philippines has deployed its largest warship at Scarborough to fend off Chinese rivals laying claim to the sea shoal.
The shoal lies off the northwest coast of the country and those intending to call Philippines may question the long-standing dispute regarding ownership of the shoal which is believed to be a valuable oil and gas resource.
Although the warship attempted to arrest Chinese fishermen anchored at the site, it was blocked by two surveillance boats.
According to BBC correspondent Kate McGeown, the Philippines navy boarded the Chinese ship only to find illegally-captured fish and coral.
The Philippine government said it would “assert sovereignty” over the shoal with the country’s foreign minister Albert Del Rosario revealing both nations were committed to resolving the issue, however, negotiations were at an “impasse”.
Other countries involved in disputes regarding ownership of sea shoals in the South China Sea include Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam, the BBC reported.
