International calls: Euro unemployment rate 'reaches ten per cent'

Unemployment across countries that use the euro has increased to its highest level since the currency was introduced, according to the latest figures.
The unemployment rate for the eurozone reached ten per cent in December, up from 9.9 per cent the previous month, a report from the European Union's (EU's) statistical office Eurostat has revealed.
Almost 15.8 million people are out of work in the eurozone, the figures show, representing an increase of 87,000 from November.
Among the member states of the EU, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in the Netherlands (four per cent) and Austria (5.4 per cent), with the highest rates in Latvia (22.8 per cent) and Spain (19.5 per cent).
As a comparison, Eurostat cites data showing that the unemployment rate In the USA was ten per cent in December, while in Japan it was 5.2 per cent in November.
Eurostat is based in Luxembourg and aims to provide the EU with comparative statistics, which it describes as "an important, objective and down-to-earth way of measuring how we all live".
