Silent phone conversations could soon bring an end to the bane of commuters talking loudly in a cheap call from their mobile phones.
Researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany told the BBC that a new technology they have developed picks up the electrical signals produced by muscles in the face when someone speaks in a cheap call from their mobile, which can be used to generate sythesised speech.
Tanja Shultz, of the institute, told the BBC that nine electrodes attached to the face "capture the electrical potentials that result from you moving your articulatory muscles".
"Those are the muscles that you need in order to produce speech," she added.
Mobile phones are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with developers continually looking out for new ways technology can be integrated into devices to improve people's lives.
In November, researchers at the Finnish Funding Agency of Technology and Innovation developed a technology that could be used in mobile phones to detect if users are sleeping soundly.
