Orange advert is misleading, says ASA

The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has banned an advertisement by mobile network provider Orange.
Orange has been forced to retract its advert which claimed that, "the Orange 3G network covers more people in the UK than any other operator".
The ruling followed after rival network 3 complained about Orange's boastful promotion.
Rival operator 3 challenged Orange claiming that it had the biggest population coverage. However, Orange tried to put things in place by declaring that while 3 had the widest geographical coverage, Orange, in fact, had the biggest population coverage.
However, the ASA ruled that despite the intentions behind Orange's claim, the exact wording of the advertisement was ambiguous and could mislead consumers.
Marc Allera, sales and marketing director at 3, said: "Right now consumers struggle to get a consistent picture of how 3G networks compare when it comes to coverage. It is in the interest of consumers for there to be a definitive view on 3G network coverage."
