Reform of Sri Lankan prisons needed, experts say

People planning to make cheap calls to Sri Lanka should be aware a call has been made for the reform of the prison system.
According to a report by the Lawyers for Human Rights and Development (LHRD), Sri Lankan prisons are at bursting point as they hold almost three times their capacity.
Moreover, more than half of these occupants are remand prisoners waiting to be tried, with more than 1,300 of those kept in custody for around two years, and some being contained for five years or more, reported The Sunday Leader.
The report, entitled Pre-trial Detention in Sri Lanka: Reforming the System of Bail and Upholding the Right to Speedy Trial, calls for review of the bail system so that detainees do not have to “languish” in prisons for such extended periods of time.
The news provider quoted the report as saying: “A large number of remand prisoners are languishing in jails for long periods of time because they are not brought to trial within a reasonable time.”
Executive director of the LHRD Kalyananda Tiranagama said that the right to a speedy trial was a basic human right, which was being denied to those “presumed to be innocent”.
