Sri Lanka 'needs 10 years to clear mines'

Sri Lanka could need another ten years to clear the half million landmines which lie buried in the north of the country, according to the head of a de-mining group.
In news which is sure to prompt cheap international calls from family in the UK, Nigel Robinson, country head of the Swiss Foundation for Mine Action, claimed that that there is still a real threat from the mines which remain hidden after Sri Lanka's civil war.
After the war, which lasted a quarter of a century, thousands of landmines, rockets and hand grenades were been left behind by the separatist Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan army.
Mr Robinson told AlertNet: "It'll perhaps take ten years for Sri Lanka to become fully mine-impact free, assuming the current capacity of de-miners can be maintained."
The charity currently has 750 de-miners working to clear the mines and has removed 60,000 since 2002.
