Sudan governing party considers name change

The ruling political party in Sudan is contemplating changing its name in an effort to consolidate the country as an Islamist state, it has been reported.
In a move that could impact those wishing to make cheap calls to Sudan, the National Congress Party (NCP) could be rebranded Hizbollah, the sudantribune.com revealed.
The new name means Party of God, with the head of the NCP Karam Allah Abbas disclosing the proposal on Tuesday (February 14th) in an address to members of his new government after the swearing-in ceremony.
Some members of the ruling party have expressed their wishes that opposition to a name change from other parties should be ignored as they want to encourage the government to align itself more closely with Sharia, Islamic law.
Although Sudanese Islamists in Khartoum support the suggestion, they are divided on the best way to bring it into effect, the news provider said.
Meanwhile, tensions between South Sudan and China have emerged after South Sudan discovered the Chinese may have co-operated with Sudan on taking over some of the country’s oil when it became independent in July.
