Tourism 'picking up again' across Middle East
Monday, Nov 21, 2011 Filed Under :Planet Talk Account News
In the wake of the Arab Spring earlier this year, holidaymakers are still curious to visit countries in the Middle East.
Speaking at the World Travel Market at London's ExCel, UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai said the changes in the Middle East and North Africa offer "enormous opportunities" for tourism.
Travel magazine Lonely Planet recently listed Muscat, the capital of Oman, as the second best city in the world to visit in 2012.
Contributor to Lonely Planet Tom Hall believes the Arab Spring put a temporary stop to people visiting the Middle East this year but, added that interest is picking up in safer areas.
"People are still looking at more stable destinations and realising just how much they have to offer," he said.
Muscat is a destination with lots of heritage; it was a world trading port for centuries and has a growing cultural scene with many new resorts opening as well as an opera house.
Success as a tourist trap next year, however, depends on the political situation of other places in the Middle East. The UAE and Oman managed to stay clear of political unrest, which stands in their favour.
"Provided there's stability people will be looking to go there," added Mr Hall.
