Broadband tax criticism 'is key to highlighting problems'

Criticism of the UK 50p broadband tax is appropriate, given that only a minority of people may benefit from it, according to a leading industry expert.
Proposals to tax British residents more in order to pay for high-speed internet upgrades are right to be questioned, broadband.co.uk has claimed.
Editor of the website Edd Dawson suggested there is a danger that a two-tier system will be created, with rural areas being left behind.
He said: "Although a lot of broadband access is via a telephone line, it is not universally via a telephone line.
"So those people who get cable broadband, they would probably be exempt from the tax."
More than half of British residents are paying over the odds for their supposed unlimited broadband packages, according to Broadbandchoices.co.uk.
Research by the firm suggested that many customers are only scratching the surface of their download limit, so could save money by switching to a capped service package.
