The Australian tourism sector has performed resiliently in the face of challenging global economic conditions, it is claimed.
During 2009, the number of international visitors to the country remained steady, according to new data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
"Despite the headwind of the global financial crisis and the outbreak of the H1N1 virus, Australian tourism managed to break even on international tourist numbers, defying the global downturn last year," said Tourism Australia's managing director Andrew McEvoy.
There was even growth in the number of international visitors to Australia from certain countries, he commented, including the likes of India, China and the USA.
However, he acknowledged that there had been declines from markets such as Japan and Korea as a result of local economic conditions.
International visitors travelling through Perth Airport may have noticed that a new lounge has been opened by Virgin Blue to provide a relaxing environment for passengers heading into and out of Western Australia.
