Global mobile phone users to break 5bn mark in 2010, ITU predicts

The number of global mobile phone users is set to break the five billion mark this year, it has been claimed.
According to the latest figures published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), there were some 4.6 billion mobile subscribers across the world in 2009.
Now, with mobile telecoms services continually improving in developing countries and consumers living in leading world economic nations being offered increasingly-sophisticated smartphones, this is set to break the five billion mark before the end of the year.
Notably, as well as being used to keep in touch with families and friends and for work purposes, the ITU has also reported that people in the developing world are now increasingly making use of their handsets for mobile banking and healthcare services.
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the organisation's secretary general Hamadoun Toure explained that mobiles can be used to remind patients to have check-ups or pre-natal appointments, while they can also be used to send people potentially life-saving advice such as how to take medication or vaccination.
This prediction comes soon after a report published by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association revealed that 16 million people in the UK accessed the internet from their mobile phones in 2009 alone.
