Mobile internet now 'hugely popular' in the UK

Increasing numbers of people in the UK are using their mobile phones to access the internet, it is reported.
Some 16 million people in the UK accessed the internet from their mobile phones in December 2009, according to the latest statistics published by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association.
Those consumers viewed a combined total of 6.7 billion pages and spent 4.8 billion minutes online during the month.
Facebook was the most commonly visited website, with just under five million unique visitors, with Google sites in second position.
The surge in popularity of smartphones is said to have driven mobile internet usage over recent months.

A recent report by Strategy Analytics found that global smartphone shipments jumped by 30 per cent year-on-year during the fourth quarter of last year, representing the industry's fastest growth rate since quarter three of 2008.
