Churches in Bangladesh are warming up to the important role they play in enriching the community.
Small Christian Communities (SCCs) are integral to giving people a sense of belonging and empowerment.
Heading a workshop on SCCs, Father Albin Gomes, director of the Christian Communities Program of the Episcopal Commission for Laity, highlighted how churches can help to build better cohesive societies.
He said: "SCCs can help us to create a more participatory church and … build thriving, service-oriented Christian communities."
Through various narratives it was established that members of an SCC can effectively carry out outreach work as well as act as a reserve force in times of crises, providing much-needed disaster management.
Speaking to the Union of Catholic Asian News, Father Boniface Murmu from Dinajpur diocese explained how after a fire had destroyed houses in a village, SCC members had stepped up to provide food, shelter as well as funds for re-building the homes.
