India opens market to international retailers

Cheap calls to India look likely to follow a retail reform which allows international traders to open wholly foreign-owned "single brand stores".
This opens the door to companies such as Adidas and home furnishings giant Ikea, who have both expressed interest in moving to the country.
Adidas and other major brands currently own shops in the retail centres of urban areas in India, however under existing rules are obliged to operate with a local partner, a clause which could be acting as a deterrent for foreign businesses.
Rajiv Kumar, secretary general of business lobby group FICCI, claims: "The move will not only mean more foreign direct investment but lead to employment and also lead to more choices for consumers."
The new proposal comes with the condition that foreign companies who own more than 51 per cent of their shops in India should source a minimum of 30 per cent of products from local small-scale suppliers, in a bid to create a more sustainable economy and to boost jobs.
