Afghan lower house of parliament 'to be opened amid controversy'

A constitutional crisis in Afghanistan has been narrowly avoided by a deal to open the country's lower house of parliament, in a landmark move that could prompt cheap international calls to and from the country.
The opening of the lower house of parliament was postponed by president Hamid Karzai so a tribunal would have more time to investigate allegations of fraud made after last September's poll.
However, the decision was later reversed but then uncertainty struck when a number of MPs asked for the tribunal to be abolished.
A statement has now been released from the president's office which says that the new parliament will now be inaugurated on January 26th, which is thought to be a sign the president will give ground on Monday.
