Australian livestock rules 'could harm economy'

Sheep and cattle farmers in Australia have warned that new livestock transportation rules could harm the industry, an argument that could spark cheap international calls.
Australia's federal government announced today that the country's live export sector would be responsible for the welfare of any cattle, sheep or goats they send to another country.
This is partly in response to public outrage over the treatment of cattle in Indonesia in July, leading to general legislation for all exports.
Industry experts and businesses have claimed that the extension of this system could dent the sector's bottom line, however it is a cost they would have to bear.
Sheepmeat Council boss Ron Cullen told AAP: "It's a significant issue to be changing 2,000 years of culture. But we've got to put these welfare standards in place, so that's a non-negotiable."
