Bangladesh opposition leader arrested

The opposition leader in Bangladesh has been arrested in a turn of events sure to trigger cheap international calls.
Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was arrested on charges of instigating violence during a general strike sponsored by the opposition in June.
Mr Chowdhury was arrested at his home in Dhaka in connection to a murder case.
The government also called for the arrest of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) politician for war crime charges from 1971 but deputy commissioner of police Monirul Islam told the AFP news agency that the arrest was not for anything regarding war crimes.
However, the BBC reports that the war crimes tribunal said it had solid evidence of Mr Chowdhury's participation in genocide, rape, arson and looting.
The 1971 War of Independence was a conflict between West Pakistan and East Pakistan, which is now Bangladesh.
