Bangladesh opts to vaccinate dogs against rabies

Bangladesh has decided to vaccinate its stray dogs rather than put them down in a bid to prevent the growing number of rabies infections, news which is likely to encourage cheap international calls.
Rabies currently kills around 2,000 people a year in the country and is largely spread through a burgeoning stray dog population. Dog bites each year also total 300,000 annually across the country.
The Bangladeshi government will work with the World Society for the Protection of Animals to help implement the large scale vaccination programme, which will be trialled in a tourist area called Cox's Bazaar.
Earlier this year, the World Health Organisation said that over 1.4 billion people in south-east Asia are at risk of contracting the disease due to humans and dogs living in close proximity.
