World Bank pledges to support tigers

The World Bank is to provide $100 million (£63.5 million) to save the wild tiger by stopping illegal trading and supporting the protection of habitats.
World Bank Group president Robert B. Zoellick said that the organisation is working with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and hopefully India to finance the South Asia regional wildlife project.
Mr Zoellick said the World Bank would support the 13 tiger range countries in order to effectively crack down on their poachers and traffickers.
This move is likely to spark cheap international calls from conservationists and wildlife experts around the globe.
Tiger range countries also agreed to the Global Tiger Recovery Program aiming to double the number of wild tigers to 7,000 by 2022.
"The World Bank will not finance any infrastructure projects that impact core tiger breeding areas - areas that the tiger range countries plan to make inviolate," he said.
"Bricks and mortar should not bury biodiversity. Critical ecosystems should not be paved over for short-term economic gains."
