India custody deaths top 1500 a year

More than 1,500 people have died in custody in India this year, according to official data released by the country's Human Rights Commission and reported by the BBC.
Cheap calls to India are likely to follow the news, especially in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, which was the location of the most deaths in prison and police custody, reaching 331 in 2011.
Other states with high levels of custodial fatality were Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar.
The high levels of deaths in official custody have been blamed on illness, attempts to escape, suicide and accidents.
Human rights groups have claimed that torture plays a large factor in the numbers of prison deaths; however local authorities reject this accusation.
It is believed that the figure could be far higher as the data was only based on individual complaints and visits to prisons.
