Nigeria pledges support for Palestinian statehood

Nigeria has pledged its ongoing support for Palestine to become officially recognised as a state by the United Nations, a decision which could prompt a flurry of cheap international calls.
At the recent General Assembly in New York Nigeria cemented its position as a keen supporter of Palestinian rights.
Nigeria's foreign minister Olugbenga Ashiru told journalists: "We prefer a solution whereby two states - Palestine and Israel - will live peacefully side-by-side.
"Our stand and policy is very clear and there is no change in our position," Mr Ashira confirmed.
Nigeria has recognised the sovereign state of Palestine since 1984 and has played host to a Palestinian ambassador ever since.
Palestinian representatives are currently trying to secure more votes to ensure that they can become an officially recognised state by the United Nations community.
