Pakistan honour killing blamed for 675 deaths

Cheap calls to Pakistan look likely after its Human Rights Commission (HRC) claimed that at least 675 women and girls have been murdered through so-called honour killings during the first nine months of 2011.
It said that cases of honour-based violence were most likely to occur in communities which are rooted in the concepts of honour and shame and hold different views of women.
The HRC argued that more needs to be done by the government to prosecute these murderers and perpetrators of violence as the police frequently view these cases as family matters.
Ali Dayan Hasan, Pakistan director at Human Rights Watch, commented to the AFP that "inability to enforce rule of law" was a major factor in the high number of these killings.
"A combination of legal reforms, exercise of administrative authority and social awareness can greatly help check the honour killings," he said.
