Pakistani police discover shackled patients in dungeon
Tuesday, Dec 13, 2011 Filed Under :Planet Talk Card News
Police in Pakistan have discovered that around 60 young men have been kept in shackles at an Islamic seminary which offered rehabilitation services for addicts. Parents from Karachi paid to treat their children through worship and Islamic instruction, or to remove the burden of the presence, however few had any idea that many were being kept in shackles under the institution. Patients who tried to escape or were found to be dealing drugs were subsequently chained together, with children as young as eight also subjected to this treatment. In Pakistan there is little or no help from the state for drug addicts and the presence of seminaries is commonplace. However, without regulation many young children and people with mental disabilities could be subject to abuse by owners of such centres. Some members of staff have since been arrested and investigations are ongoing. © Copyright Use Planet Talk to call Pakistan with the cheapest rates to landlines and mobiles
