Pakistani province to make Chinese lessons compulsory

The Pakistani province of Sindh has revealed plans to make Chinese language lessons compulsory in schools from 2013, a move which is sure to spark cheap international calls from friends and family in the UK eager to learn more.
Mandarin will be taught to children from ten years old onwards, in a move which the provincial government hopes will encourage closer ties with China.
It has also been revealed that high achieving students will receive foreign scholarships to further study Chinese, as an incentive for learning this new language.
Some critics have however raised the question of how the government can afford to invest more time in teaching staff and materials as education resources are already stretched.
Students in Pakistan are already made to learn English, Urdu and Sindhi as compulsory subjects.
