Filipino fiestas 'part and parcel' of country's culture

The awe-inspiring Philippines fiestas are likely to prompt cheap international calls to loved ones back in the UK.
Taking place across the country, festivals are "part and parcel of Filipino culture", according to the country's Department of Tourism.
One of the more popular fiesta is the Sinulog Festival, which is held every third weekend of January, to honour the Queen of Cebu.
Embassy of the Philippines officer-in-charge at the Department of Tourism, Chit Afuang, explained: "The festival features some of the country's most colourful displays of ceremony and pageantry: participants clothed in bright-coloured costumes dance to the rhythm of drums and native gongs.
"The streets are generally lined with vendors and pedestrians all wanting to witness the street dancing."
Other popular festivals include the Feast of Black Nazarene, held in January in Manila, and the Pahiyas Festival, held near Luzon, which honours the patron saint of farmers.
