Poland marks 30th anniversary of martial law

Poland paused on Tuesday (December 13th) to mark the 30th anniversary of the communist government's martial law crackdown on members of the Solidarity trade union.
To remember the historic anniversary re-enactments, church services, protests and ceremonies were held around the country, which are sure to spark cheap phone calls to Poland to discuss the important occasion.
Thousands of demonstrators also used the opportunity to join a rally against current government policies, calling for prosecution of those responsible for the crackdown.
In 1981 Poland's communist government declared martial law in an attempt to crush the solidarity movement led by Lech Walesa.
This eventually helped to lead to the end of communism within the Soviet Bloc, however caused the deaths of 100 people.
Martial law was eventually lifted in 1983.
