Saudi Arabian woman spared lashes by king

A Saudi Arabian woman has been spared a punishment of ten lashes after she was pardoned by King Abdullah, a development which is sure to encourage cheap international calls to be made from the UK.
Shema Jastaina was found guilty of violating a rule which bans women from driving and was sentenced to the punishment, amid much protest around the world.
King Abdullah has called off the lashes after he was made aware of the case.
Ms Jastaina's ordeal interestingly began only one day after the king promised that women would be allowed to vote in Saudi Arabia in 2015.
The country is currently the only nation in the world that prevents women from driving, which can mean that many families have to hire full-time drivers or rely on the assistance of male relatives to travel.
