South African ostrich farmers struggle after mass cull

Ostrich farmers could become the subject of cheap calls to South Africa, as they struggle to cope with the culling of thousands of their birds.
The animals have been killed during one of the country's worst outbreaks of bird flu and profits have fallen dramatically after exports to the European Union were banned to stop the virus from spreading.
This has proved particularly difficult as Europe is the biggest market for South Africa's ostrich meat, with consumers shifting away from red meat towards this low-cholesterol meat.
Farmers have also suffered as tourist farms have closed to the public and the only money left to make is through exporting feathers.
In an interview with the BBC, ostrich farmer Arenhold Hooper claimed his birds were among 40,000 killed in his area.
"It has been a frustrating time for all of us. Our first priority now is to get birds back on the farm so I can bring back all my employees and we go back to earning a living," Hooper said.
