Sri Lanka refugee camp 'to close'

Refugee camp Menik Farm in northern Sri Lanka is set to close, news which could spark a flurry of cheap international calls from concerned friends and family in the UK.
Around 7,400 people who currently live in one of the world's largest refugee camps will be relocated in two weeks time, and the Sri Lankan government has assured them that they will receive new facilities including "semi-permanent houses".
Tamil politicians have refuted these claims and argue that the displaced people will be moved to areas which are little more than newly cleared jungle and that the government should return them to their homes.
The Sri Lankan government has argued that it would not be possible to send refugees back to the villages they used to inhabit, due to safety risks from uncleared minefields.
Earlier this week, the Swiss Foundation for Mine Action claimed that post-war Sri Lanka would need another decade to clear the half a million landmines which remain buried around northern villages.
