Those planning to make cheap calls to Nigeria may be interested to learn an increasing number of the population is living on less than $1 per day.
According to new figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the number of Nigerians living in poverty rose from 54.7 per cent in 2004 to 60.9 per cent in 2010.
As such, in a population of an estimated 163 million, some 112.47 million are below the poverty line, despite Nigeria being a significant oil base.
Those living in the south-west of the country surviving on $1 per day stands at 50.1 per cent, the lowest level of poverty, compared to the north west, with the highest at 70.4 per cent living on less than $7 per week.
Head of the NBS Yemie Kale said: “Despite the fact that the Nigerian economy is growing, the proportion of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing every year.”
Meanwhile, children in the state of Zamfara are continuing to die as a result of lead-poisoning from gold mining, with the practice already taking 400 young lives.
