UK universities 'need to be flexible' about attracting overseas staff

University human resource practices need to be flexible enough to respond to the changing needs of students and employers, it has been claimed.
Employing high-quality staff is also an important part of maintaining the highest standards of teaching and research in the UK, according to the chief executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Sir Alan Langlands.
He was commenting following the publication of a new HEFCE report, which is intended to spark debate about the future of higher education.
Challenges outlined in the report are seen as key to determining the future of the higher education sector, such as whether salaries and job prospects are good enough to encourage the best talent from overseas.
Sir Alan added: "Universities and colleges employ high-quality staff, which are their greatest asset.
"This report is intended to stimulate senior management teams to think about the major issues facing the higher education workforce, ensuring that we can maintain standards and momentum in more constrained economic times."
It may not just be staff from overseas that may be forced to think twice about accepting a UK university place in the future.
Recent changes to the UK's immigration rules could make it more difficult for international students to find places in British institutions.
