A teacher from the Philippines has been named CNN Hero of the Year.
Efren Penaflorida attracted the highest number of online votes for the news channel's award, gaining recognition for his work in teaching children from poor areas.
The 28-year-old is the man behind the innovative Kariton Klassroom scheme, which takes books to children who live on the streets or in slums.
A so-called Pushcart Classroom is taken to the children, which is equipped with learning materials such as folding tables and blackboards.
The CNN award is fantastic recognition for Mr Penaflorida, as some 9,000 nominees from 100 countries were nominated for this year's accolade.
In other news from the Philippines, it has emerged that current president Gloria Arroyo will step aside and not stand for re-election in the new year.
The Lakas-Kampi party's candidate at the election in May will be defence secretary Gilberto Teodoro.
