Philippines to cease fire over holidays

The Philippine government has ordered a cease fire against communist rebels over the Christmas period.
In what could be good news to those making calls to the Philippines, officials have been ordered not to take any offensive action against guerrilla fighters from Friday (December 16th) until January 2nd.
The cease-fire is a traditional token of good will imposed by the government over the festive period and although the rebels usually reciprocate with their own stand-down, they have yet to make an announcement.
Military spokesman Colonel Arnulfo Burgos said that the cease-fire "shall not include military actions aimed to secure and protect the populace, vital installations, major investment infrastructures and communities against violent attacks."
Thousands of people living in the Philippines recently fled their homes due to fighting, with ore than 10,000 people reportedly leaving their homes in three remote towns in Zamboanga Sibugay province.
