EC welcomes Microsoft web browser choice commitment

The European Commission (EC) has welcomed Microsoft's commitment to give users the opportunity to choose from a variety of web browsers to access the internet.

Users of Windows PCs that have Internet Explorer installed as a default web browser will be provided with a Choice Screen, giving them the chance to make an unbiased decision.

The announcement follows years of regulatory to-ing and fro-ing between the company and European chiefs over the use of Internet Explorer as a default on the operating system.

Competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia explained that giving consumers this choice is an important means of providing customers with a "gateway to the internet".

He said: "Giving consumers the possibility to switch or try a browser other than that included in Windows will bring more competition and innovation in this important area to the benefit of European internet users."

Mr Almunia added that open web standards are "critical" to the further development of the open internet.

Microsoft faces increased competition across mobile devices too, where its recently released Windows Mobile 7 Series faces competition from rivals Google and Apple.
