Polish websites join online protests

Almost 100 websites in Poland have joined forces in a mass blackout in protest over the country's anti-piracy pact.
In acts similar to the Wikipedia-led protest last week against the US Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), sites chose to shroud their content in blank pages to show their opposition against Warsaw's plans to sign a multilateral anti online piracy accord.
On Thursday January 26th, the government will sign the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), which has been formed to create international intellectual property protection standards.
However, much like SOPA the proposals have met with opposition parties claiming that it limits internet freedoms.
Polish websites including joemonster.org and demotywatory.pl joined in with the black out, while silent street protest attracted large numbers of campaigner in Warsaw.
Cyber hacking collectives such as Anonymous and Polish Underground have also raised their concerns recently after taking down official websites belonging to the country's president, prime minister and other noted ministers this weekend.
