Cheap international calls: Universal mobile phone charger approved

A universal charger for mobile phones has been approved for use by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The decision could eliminate the range of chargers in use today, consolidating the technologies into one single device.
Brian Turner, executive editor of MobileWire.co.uk, said consumers may view the move as nothing more than a way of making mobile phones easier and more convenient to use.
However, Mr Turner stated that the move could have a significantly positive effect on the environment by minimising the waste generated in the production of mobile technology.
"It will prevent the generation of hundreds of tons of electronic waste material in the future and additionally help reduce mining pressures in environmentally sensitive areas," he commented.
The ITU has confirmed that the universal charger will have at least a four-star efficiency rating, making it up to three times more energy-efficient than an unrated charger.
