Visitors making their way to South Africa can hope to have more peaceful stay in Cape Town as the city council moves to acquire funding to control its baboon problem.
Menacing baboons targeting unsuspecting foreigners in their cars or at tourist hotspots have led to a chaotic situation. Although these incidents must have given Brits plenty of reasons to make cheap international calls, it has no doubt also inconvenienced many people.
The present scenario has been ignored by park officials and local authorities, forcing the city council to go to court in order to return the city to some form of discipline.
Mayor Dan Plato pointed out that a court ruling had become necessary to kick-start operations that would see the baboon control programme taking adequate measures to safeguard residents as well as foreign visitors.
He said: "They have refused to do so, leaving us little option but to go it alone and seek a court ruling."
